Varnish coating is a clear, liquid layer applied to printed surfaces to protect and enhance the final appearance. It is a cost-effective finishing technique used in commercial printing and can be applied in much the same way as CMYK inks. Unlike laminates or UV coatings, varnish does not involve an added film or curing process—it simply dries along with the ink.
Varnish is typically applied during the printing process using the same offset or digital press. It goes through a printing unit just like regular ink, allowing printers to coat specific areas (spot varnish) or the entire sheet (flood varnish) without changing equipment.
Because it dries quickly with the ink, varnish is often used in high-speed production environments. It offers a subtle finish that enhances color vibrancy and adds slight protection without the glossiness of more intense coatings like UV.
